SACHIKO MATSUYAMA

Craft Culture Coordinator monomo Ltd.

After design and management strategy roles with several companies, Sachiko went independent in 2014 with a business that develops cross-border learning programs for an international audience focusing on craft as a mirror for society, values, and spirituality.

Underlying this work is the principle that craft represents a sustainable relationship between humans and nature and a manifestation of an entity greater than the self. She brings this same perspective to her current work developing projects with sustainable craft materials.

Her work with urushi, or natural lacquer, highlights the primitive form of human involvement with nature which passes through the hands of forest keepers, artisans and users, and will be handed down to future generations. Sachiko is the founder of monomo (2014), and co-founder of PERSPECTIVE (2019).
